Pay 5 FWD is a new experimental kind of charity that is meant to illustrate that humanity is fundamentally good.
We give individuals $5. We ask them to donate the money to their favorite charity. We ask them to add to it. We ask for the story of what they did. And then we use those stories to inspire others.
Every day we all see negative headlines about how the world is falling apart. Social media and news headlines paint very bleak pictures of how humans choose to treat each other. After seeing enough negative headlines, it’s easy to view the world as full of selfish, ego-driven monsters.
The world isn’t a perfect place. Humanity can be evil. But it can also be selfless, compassionate, and amazing.
At Pay 5 Fwd we know that at every person’s core, there’s a hero waiting to come out. The problem is that people rarely have cut and dry opportunities to act heroic. The world is a complicated and messy place. You can’t just dawn a cape and start beating up criminals to show your heroism. If everyone did that, we would very quickly run out of capes.
But what you can do is make a donation to a charity that is working to improve the world.
In order to make a better world, we need to take responsibility, and give others the opportunity to make it better.

The purpose of this campaign is to provide others the opportunity to be heroic. People don’t act unless they’re called upon. By giving someone $5, and calling on them to act, you’re giving them an opportunity to be a hero.
